The Wheelienet Disability Awareness Program offers Schools, Corporate and Community groups the following Program Session Times:

Up to an Hour Session

This session begins with discussion on wheelchair sports in general and then either accident prevention, spinal injuries or challenges faced by people in wheelchairs. Followed by:

  • Basic moving in wheelchairs skills- forwards and backwards
  • Weaving between cones in chairs
  • Shooting basketballs
  • Wheelchair basketball game dependent on time and age of students

One-Two Hour Sessions

This session begins with discussion on wheelchair sports in general and then either accident prevention, spinal injuries or challenges faced by people in wheelchairs. Followed by:

  • Basic moving in wheelchairs skills- forwards and backwards
  • Obstacle course with wheelchairs
  • Shooting basketballs
  • 2 on 1 basketball
  • 5 on 5 basketball

The Wheelienet program is a part of the Premiers Be Active Challenge.

Option to extend across Multiple Weeks

Week 1

Discuss what Disability Recreation and Sports SA does and sports that can be played by people in wheelchairs

  • Basic use of chairs- moving forwards, backwards and turning etc
  • Relays in chairs

Week 2

Discuss accident prevention at school and out of school

  • Continue to develop wheelchair skills- weaving between cones, obstacle courses, rolling over things and around things etc

Week 3

Discuss spinal injury

  • Begin ball skills in chairs- moving with the ball, bouncing the ball, passing, picking the ball up off the ground

Week 4

Discuss challenges faced by people in wheelchairs

  • Combine bouncing, passing and weaving
  • Shooting activities
  • 2 on 1 basketball

Week 5

5 on 5 basketball games
